The IPL 2026 playoff race got even more exciting on Sunday as Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals faced each other in a high-pressure match at the Wankhede Stadium. For Rajasthan Royals, this game was nothing less than a do-or-die battle because a loss would end their playoff hopes. Mumbai Indians, meanwhile, wanted to finish the league stage strongly and carry momentum into the next phase of the tournament.
After winning the toss, Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya decided to bowl first, and that decision worked perfectly in the opening overs. Even without Jasprit Bumrah in the playing XI, MI’s bowling attack looked sharp, energetic, and fully in control from the start.
RR started the innings positively, but things changed very quickly once Mumbai picked up their first wicket. By the end of the powerplay, Rajasthan Royals were already struggling at 54/3, and the pressure was clearly visible on their batters.
Rajasthan Royals Begin with Confidence
Rajasthan Royals openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi walked out with positive intent despite the huge pressure of the match. Both batters looked comfortable during the first few overs and tried to attack whenever they got loose deliveries.
Jaiswal, in particular, looked aggressive and confident. He played some stylish shots through the covers and gave RR fans hope for a strong start. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi also supported him nicely from the other end by rotating strike and keeping the scoreboard moving.
The opening partnership slowly started building momentum, and for a few overs it looked like Rajasthan Royals were settling in nicely at the Wankhede Stadium.
But Mumbai Indians had other plans.

Will Jacks Gives Mumbai the First Big Breakthrough
Mumbai Indians needed a wicket badly, and Will Jacks delivered exactly that. The English all-rounder used his variations smartly and trapped Yashasvi Jaiswal with a clever slower delivery.
Jacks bowled the ball slightly shorter around the off stump, and because of the reduced pace, Jaiswal could not time his shot properly. The RR opener tried to play an attacking stroke after clearing his front leg, but the ball stopped slightly on the pitch and caught the leading edge of the bat.
The catch went high toward point, where Corbin Bosch kept his eyes on the ball and completed a clean reverse-cup catch.
Jaiswal’s dismissal was a huge moment because he was looking dangerous and had already started finding boundaries regularly. His wicket broke the 33-run opening stand and immediately shifted momentum toward Mumbai Indians.
The MI players celebrated loudly because they knew how important that breakthrough was in such a massive game.
Deepak Chahar Strikes in the Very Next Over
Rajasthan Royals didn’t even get enough time to recover from the first wicket because Deepak Chahar struck almost immediately.
Playing in place of Jasprit Bumrah, Chahar bowled with excellent discipline and movement. He delivered a seam-up ball angled away from Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, forcing the batter into a risky shot.
Sooryavanshi tried to hit across the line but completely mistimed the stroke. The ball took the leading edge and flew behind point, where Naman Dhir ran in from the boundary and safely completed the catch.
With that wicket, RR suddenly slipped to 33/2 inside five overs.
Mumbai Indians players looked fully pumped up after the second breakthrough, while Rajasthan Royals started feeling the pressure of the must-win situation.
Riyan Parag Fails to Deliver on Return
A lot of expectations were on Rajasthan Royals captain Riyan Parag, who returned to the side after missing the previous game. Fans hoped he would play a responsible innings and guide the team out of trouble.
However, things didn’t go according to plan.
Allah Ghazanfar, who has impressed many people this season with his smart bowling, kept troubling Parag with changes in pace and length. The young spinner stayed patient and finally got his reward in the sixth over.
Ghazanfar bowled a slower delivery on a slightly shorter length, and Parag tried to hit it big towards long-on. But he failed to reach the pitch of the ball and ended up mistiming the shot badly.
Tilak Varma, standing near the boundary, showed brilliant awareness and athleticism. He timed his jump perfectly, grabbed the catch, and managed to keep his balance near the ropes to complete a fantastic effort.
Parag departed after scoring only 14 runs, and RR were left struggling at 54/3 after six overs.
That wicket gave Mumbai Indians complete control of the match.
Mumbai Indians Shine Even Without Bumrah
Before the match, many fans were surprised to see Jasprit Bumrah missing from Mumbai Indians’ playing XI. Since Bumrah has been MI’s most reliable bowler, people wondered whether the bowling attack would lose its sharpness.
But the rest of the bowlers stepped up brilliantly.
Deepak Chahar bowled with confidence, Will Jacks used his variations cleverly, and Allah Ghazanfar once again proved why he is becoming such an important player for MI this season.
Apart from the bowling, Mumbai’s fielding was also outstanding. Corbin Bosch, Naman Dhir, and Tilak Varma all pulled off excellent catches under pressure and helped MI dominate the early stages of the game.
Hardik Pandya’s captaincy also looked aggressive and smart. He kept attacking fields in place and constantly put pressure on RR batters.
Dhruv Jurel and Dasun Shanaka Face Tough Challenge
After losing three wickets quickly, Rajasthan Royals badly needed a strong partnership. Dhruv Jurel and Dasun Shanaka had the responsibility of rebuilding the innings and keeping RR alive in the contest.
Jurel looked calm and tried to rotate strike while also searching for boundaries whenever possible. Shanaka, meanwhile, focused on settling down before attacking.
But Mumbai Indians bowlers did not allow them to relax at all. Every over came with pressure, tight fielding, and disciplined bowling.
The required run rate slowly started increasing, making the situation even more difficult for Rajasthan Royals.
Playoff Pressure Clearly Visible on RR
This was one of the biggest matches of Rajasthan Royals’ season, and the pressure was clearly visible after the early wickets. The batters looked nervous, and MI took full advantage of that situation.
Every dot ball increased pressure on RR, while every wicket pushed Mumbai Indians closer to complete control of the game.
On the other hand, MI looked fearless and energetic despite already being in a stronger position in the points table. The team played with confidence, intensity, and proper planning throughout the powerplay.
Wankhede Crowd Enjoys Mumbai’s Dominance
The atmosphere inside Wankhede Stadium was absolutely electric. Mumbai fans cheered loudly after every wicket and every good fielding effort.
Tilak Varma’s stunning catch to dismiss Riyan Parag became one of the biggest highlights of the innings and received a massive reaction from the crowd.
As the match moved toward the middle overs, Mumbai Indians clearly looked ahead in the contest, while Rajasthan Royals were left searching for answers in one of their most important games of IPL 2026.
