MI vs PBKS IPL 2026: Shardul Thakur and Deepak Chahar Trigger Punjab Collapse

The clash between Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings turned completely in Mumbai’s favor after a sensational bowling performance led by Shardul Thakur. What looked like a solid batting platform for Punjab Kings suddenly collapsed under pressure as wickets kept tumbling at crucial moments.

From smart variations by Deepak Chahar to deadly seam movement from Shardul Thakur, Mumbai Indians produced a complete bowling masterclass that left PBKS struggling for survival.

Deepak Chahar Draws First Blood

Punjab Kings started positively, but Mumbai got the breakthrough they desperately needed in the sixth over.

At 50/0, young opener Priyansh Arya looked comfortable at the crease and was trying to accelerate the innings. However, Deepak Chahar outfoxed him with a clever knuckle-ball.

Bowling from around the wicket, Chahar delivered a slower ball right at the stumps. Arya moved leg side looking to create room and play aggressively, but the lack of pace deceived him completely. The ball sneaked past the bat and crashed into the stumps.

The dismissal immediately shifted momentum toward Mumbai Indians as Punjab Kings slipped to 50/1.

That wicket also highlighted Chahar’s experience in T20 cricket. Instead of relying only on pace, he used variation brilliantly and forced the batter into making a mistake.

Prabhsimran and Connolly Build Hope

After the early wicket, Prabhsimran Singh and Cooper Connolly stitched together an impressive partnership.

Both batters looked confident against the Mumbai attack. Prabhsimran played his natural attacking game while Connolly rotated strike smartly and punished loose deliveries.

The pair added 57 valuable runs and seemed ready to launch Punjab Kings toward a massive total. Mumbai bowlers looked under pressure during this phase, especially as boundaries started flowing regularly. But then came the game-changing over from Shardul Thakur.

Shardul Thakur Changes the Match in One Over

Shardul Thakur once again proved why he is known as the man with the “golden arm.” In the 12th over, he first removed the dangerous Prabhsimran Singh. Bowling at over 131 kph on a hard length outside off, Thakur forced the batter into a mistimed shot.

Prabhsimran tried to throw his hands at the ball but only managed to slice it high toward deep third. Corbin Bosch judged the catch brilliantly and completed a low catch under pressure.

That wicket ended the dangerous stand and reduced Punjab Kings to 107/2. Just two balls later, Shardul delivered the knockout punch.

Shreyas Iyer Clean Bowled by Shardul Thakur

Punjab captain Shreyas Iyer walked in with expectations on his shoulders, but Shardul Thakur had other plans.

The Mumbai pacer bowled a stunning delivery just outside off stump that straightened after pitching. Iyer stayed back trying to guide it fine, but the movement beat his outside edge completely.

The ball smashed into the top of off stump, sending the crowd into celebration mode.

It was a massive wicket because Iyer is known for stabilizing innings during difficult situations. Instead, Punjab Kings suddenly slipped from a strong position to serious trouble at 111/3.

The wicket also showed Shardul’s confidence. He mixed seam position and length beautifully, making life extremely difficult for the PBKS batters.

Raj Bawa Removes Cooper Connolly

If Punjab thought the damage had stopped, they were mistaken. Youngster Raj Bawa joined the party with a crucial wicket of Cooper Connolly.

Bowling a simple but accurate delivery on top of off stump, Bawa forced Connolly into an error. The batter backed away looking to punch through covers but completely missed the straight ball.

The delivery clipped the bails and shattered the stumps.

Within minutes, Punjab Kings had collapsed from 107/1 to 111/4, completely losing control of the innings. Mumbai Indians sensed the opportunity and attacked relentlessly from there onward.

Raj Bawa Takes a Screamer

Shardul Thakur returned to strike once again in the 14th over and got another important breakthrough. This time, Suryansh Shedge became the victim after playing a promising cameo.

Shedge flicked the ball firmly toward short mid-wicket, and it looked destined to beat the fielder. But Raj Bawa produced an outstanding athletic catch, moving quickly to his left before grabbing the ball safely with both hands near his chest.

It was a stunning effort in the field and further deepened Punjab’s misery. At 123/5, PBKS were now staring at a disappointing finish despite their strong start.

Corbin Bosch Joins the Wicket Party

Mumbai Indians’ bowlers maintained relentless pressure. Shashank Singh tried to revive the innings but failed against Corbin Bosch’s sharp bowling. Bosch bowled a back-of-a-length delivery that stayed unusually low. Shashank attempted to work it toward square leg but missed the ball entirely.

The impact looked close, but after a review, Ball Tracking confirmed the delivery would have hit the stumps. Since it was umpire’s call on impact and the original decision was OUT, the batter had to walk back.

Punjab Kings continued sinking deeper into trouble.

Shardul Completes Four-Wicket Haul Shardul Thakur wasn’t done yet. In the 17th over, he cleaned up Marco Jansen with another wicket-taking delivery.

Bowling a cross-seam full ball that stayed low, Shardul deceived Jansen completely. The batter cleared his front leg looking for a massive slog but swung over the ball.

The delivery crashed into the stumps and gave Shardul his fourth wicket of the night. The Mumbai dugout erupted in celebration as Punjab Kings fell to 140/7.

This spell once again reminded everyone why Shardul remains one of the most unpredictable and impactful bowlers in T20 cricket.

Azmatullah Omarzai’s Cameo Ends

Late in the innings, Azmatullah Omarzai tried to provide some late fireworks with an aggressive cameo.

He played a few attacking shots and looked dangerous for a brief moment. But Deepak Chahar returned to dismiss him in the final over.

Chahar bowled a full toss on middle stump, and Omarzai attempted to launch it down the ground. However, he failed to get proper elevation and ended up hitting it straight toward long-on.

Will Jacks completed a safe catch near his chest, ending the Afghan batter’s entertaining knock.

Mumbai Indians Produce a Complete Bowling Performance

The biggest reason behind Mumbai Indians’ dominance was their disciplined bowling effort. Every bowler contributed at crucial moments. Deepak Chahar provided the early breakthrough and nailed his slower deliveries.

Shardul Thakur completely changed the game with his wicket-taking spell. Corbin Bosch delivered under pressure. Raj Bawa impressed with both ball and fielding.

Punjab Kings had once looked set for a huge total, especially when they reached 107/1. But the middle-order collapse destroyed all momentum. Mumbai Indians grabbed wickets regularly, never allowing PBKS to rebuild.

Shardul Thakur Emerges as the Hero

Without any doubt, the star of the evening was Shardul Thakur. His ability to break partnerships and produce wickets at critical moments turned the match around single-handedly. Whether it was the dismissal of Prabhsimran Singh, the beauty to Shreyas Iyer, or the wicket of Marco Jansen, every breakthrough came at exactly the right time.

For Mumbai Indians, this performance could become a major turning point in the tournament.

And for Punjab Kings, the collapse from 107/1 to complete chaos will raise serious questions about their middle-order stability under pressure.
